As the sun sets over the Tibetan Plateau, an hour’s drive west of the capital, the skies above the city are filled with stars and the occasional flash of the moon.
It’s a place where a handful of climbers are doing their best to make it on a steep climb on the mountain range known as the Kushnagar Ridge.
But for the last few years, this trek has been a virtual non-event, at least for now.
The Himalayan mountains, which straddle the border between China and India, are the highest in the world.
In some places, they’re more than a thousand metres (2,000 feet) high, according to the United Nations.
A mountain range is a mountain, and a mountain range can be anything from a mountain peak in China to a mountain in Afghanistan.
But when it comes to its sheer scale, the Himalayas are a unique region.
The Kushnagar Ridge, which sits at the border of China and Nepal, stretches for almost 200 kilometres (124 miles) from its base, at the foot of Mount Everest, to the foothills of the Himalayan ranges that run from the Himalaya to the Tibetan plateau.
For the past few years the climbers have had to trek through a dangerous region to reach the top of the mountain, a journey that can take hours and sometimes even days.
Some trekkers, like the one pictured here, have been forced to trek from their villages to reach their destination, according the U.N.
They have been risking their lives, and their families, for the past two years to reach that coveted summit.
There are no signs that the Himalays will ever get off the brink, but for now, the climbers are sticking with their plan.
The last time they trekked this high, they were told by the authorities to stay off the mountain until a higher mountain was reached.
This time, the authorities told the group they had to leave and that they were no longer allowed to climb the mountain.
The climbers are also being kept on alert, using social media to alert the world about their location.
One of the climbers, known as Zhan, said the authorities had warned them they would be arrested if they went up to the top.
But he said they were not afraid.
“If we want to go to the highest point in the mountain then we can do it, so we just have to stay safe,” he said.
But it’s not a safe place.
In a sign of how close the climbers get to the peak, the police have told them they must keep their distance from the mountains, while the Nepalese government has put restrictions on the climbers’ movements.
There’s been no word from the authorities on what action they might take.
